Engaging with Families in the Medical/Surgical Intensive Care Unit to complete the Family Satisfaction (FS-ICU) Survey

Introduction:  Since the ‘Family Satisfaction with Care in the Intensive Care Unit’ (FS-ICU) survey was made available to families in the Sunnybrook Hospital’s critical care areas, the number of FS-ICU surveys completed was low.  A review of the FS-ICU survey response rate between April 2016 and May 2017, indicated 4% (n=25) of the surveys submitted were from the families visiting the medical/surgical intensive care unit (ICU).  The purpose for this study was to increase the response rate of the FS-ICU survey by 30% in the medical/surgical ICU.  It was hypothesized that by identifying and addressing barriers family members encounter in completing the FS-ICU survey, the response rate will increase.  Objective:  To explore different strategies that will aid in improving the response rate of the FS-ICU survey by increasing awareness and accessibility of the survey.  Methods:  The Plan-Do-Study-Act (PDSA) cycle methodology was used to guide this quality improvement initiative. During the first PDSA cycle, a literature review was conducted, and surveys were given to family members and the interprofessional team members who were in the medical/surgical ICU.  The surveys were done to assess the level of awareness and accessibility of the FS-ICU survey and asked for barriers to completing the FS-ICU surveys.  The survey responses were collected, analyzed and interpreted for the purpose of determining what barriers needed to be addressed in order to increase the response rate of the FS-ICU survey.  The common barriers identified from the data collected were lack of awareness and accessibility of the FS-ICU survey.  Strategies were developed to enhance awareness and accessibility.  The medical/surgical ICU interprofessional team members were informed of the strategies and were encouraged to participate.  To assess the impact of the strategies, the number of completed surveys will be reviewed by selecting a month randomly.  Results:  After implementation of the strategies, family members in the medical / surgical ICU were surveyed to make a comparison between the level of awareness initially and after implementation of the strategies.  The response rate of the FS-ICU survey increased by 46% in the medical/surgical ICU after initiating the strategies that were developed.  The level of awareness of family members also increased to 42%.  Conclusion:  Requesting feedback from family members can provide opportunity for them to share their experience and perspective on the care in the ICU.
